A Luxe Laikipia Walking Safari at Tumaren Camp

Your private safari begins in Nairobi, where your Belair driver-guide meets you for the overland journey north in a 4x4 Land Cruiser. Leave the capital behind and travel through Kenya’s central highlands toward Laikipia, watching the scenery open into the dramatic northern landscapes for which the region is known.

Arrive at Tumaren Camp and settle into your spacious en-suite tent. After lunch and time to unwind, meet the local guiding team for an introduction to the landscape and the style of safari ahead. Depending on arrival time and conditions, head out for a gentle guided walk or an introductory game drive, beginning to read tracks, signs and wildlife movement at ground level.

Return to camp for sundowners and dinner. The evening may continue with a night game drive, conditions permitting, offering a different perspective on Laikipia after dark.

Wake to the sounds of the bush and prepare for the signature Tumaren experience: exploring Laikipia on foot with an experienced local guide. The walk can be adapted from a relaxed stroll to a longer outing, depending on guest preference and conditions. The emphasis is not simply on covering distance, but on slowing down enough to notice tracks, plants, birds and the smaller details that are easily missed from a vehicle.

Tumaren’s friendly camels add a distinctive northern Kenya character to the experience. They can accompany walking outings and carry water, snacks and extra bags on longer excursions, while camel riding can form part of the day’s activities.

After returning to camp for lunch and some downtime, choose from the experiences available around Tumaren: animal tracking, bird watching, rock climbing using the camp’s established top-rope routes, beading, a game drive or another guided walk. Where timing and local arrangements allow, a visit to a neighbouring manyatta, school or local market can also be incorporated.

As the day cools, enjoy another bush activity before returning to camp for dinner. A night drive may be arranged as part of the camp experience.

Enjoy a final Laikipia morning at an unhurried pace. Subject to departure timing, take a short guided walk, enjoy the camp surroundings or head out for a final wildlife experience before breakfast.

After checking out, meet your Belair driver-guide and begin the private drive back to Nairobi. The changing scenery provides a relaxed close to the safari as you travel south from Laikipia into Kenya’s central highlands and onward to the capital.

Arrive in Nairobi later in the day, where the safari concludes with drop-off at your agreed hotel, residence or suitable city location.
