1 Day in Tamarind Dhow Dinner

1 Day

The Tamarind Dhow dinner provides a unique experience, have lunch or dinner while sailing on the Indian Ocean in Mombasa on the Kenyan coast. The Tamarind group has two dhows; namely “nawalilkher” and “babulkher”. They are traditional Arab sailing boats that in their previous life used to ferry cargo along the Kenyan coastline.

They have now been refurbished and turned into beautiful floating restaurants that drift along the tide as you dine under the moonlight. The sunset at the start of the dinner cruise is a great highlight alongside the great food served

The larger boat the nawalilkher is available for individual, couples or a group of friends who can book dinner. It can seat 70 people for dinner and has lots of rooms to dance on the Indian Ocean night cruises. The boat allows for cocktail parties for up to 100 people.

Itinerary (Dinner at the Dhow)

Ever had dinner on dhow? Here is a great chance to spend your late afternoon and evening on the traditional Arab sailing ship while enjoying local seafood while sailing in the Indian Ocean. The dhow has been completely refurbished as a beautiful floating restaurant without losing any of the traditional aspects of the original dhow.

Your evening cruise begins at the tamarind pier where you board this magnificent wooden boat with a special welcome by one of the waiters who will greet you and escort you to your private table. A special house cocktail famously known as ‘Dawa’ made with vodka, lime, honey, sugar, and crushed ice will be brought for you to enjoy. You may also order a non-alcoholic cocktail.

As the dhow leaves the pier at around sunset, the setting could not be more delightful. The dhow sails around Tudor Creek where you enjoy breath-taking views of Old Town and Fort Jesus before arriving at a sheltered bay where the feast begins with an initiation of a live band playing.

A four-course meal of mouth-watering edible delights is served, such as grilled lobster, fish, steak and much more. When your belly is full, the waiter brings you a delicious cup of Arabica coffee or tea, or you may also request your favourite cocktail and then dance with your partner or relax while the dhow sails back to the pier. Awaiting there will be your Explorer Kenya representative who will drive you back to the beach hotel or place of preference for overnight.
